There is a revolving restaurant, the Chart House, a grab-a-bite cafe and a bar/lounge at the top of the tower. Today, it is the tallest occupied structure in San Antonio. At the time-and for the next 28 years, when the Las Vegas Stratosphere Tower was completed-it was the tallest observation tower in the United States. Built in 1968, for the Hemisfair World's Fair, which celebrated San Antonio's 250th anniversary, the tower provides the most spectacular view of the Alamo city. The Tower of the Americas is a 750-foot observation tower/restaurant located at 739 East Cesar Chavez Boulevard in San Antonio, Texas, in the Hemisfair district, on the southeast side of the downtown area. The 3 d was okay but movement of the seats was jarring and I don't think added much to the experience ** the 4 d ride we saw the helicopter over San Antonio one was okay best. We went during the day perhaps it would be better at night. But for us it is a pass Ironically, the most interesting part of the experience was walking through a well thoughtout childrens play park. We did't spend much time at the top at all perhaps 30 min. The inside tells you the story of San Antonio but so do many other places. As you know this part of TX is flat and without any real landmarks to look at you get into you, can see "everything and nothing " all at the same time. The glass elevator ride to the observation deck was breathtaking.įor me, it was at the observation deck where things fell apart. Īt 750 feet tall and having been built for a Worlds Fair that happened more than a half Century ago it is truly and engineering marvel. We bought tickets to the Tower of the Americas as a sort of "why not " experience. The garden has lovely water features, and it’s a nice place to take family photos or selfies. If you didn’t bring quarters, ask the ticket agent if they can make change. Tickets to the tower are not sold online, so you will need to buy them at the ticket office on site. The telescopes cost 50 cents per view, so bring quarters. There is a $15 parking fee at the Tower, but the Uber driver can take you directly to the entrance without paying the parking fee. The Tower is a bit too far of a walk from the Riverwalk. The gift shop is right next to the elevator line, so we took turns browsing the gift shop while waiting in line. We didn’t watch the movie or eat at the restaurant, so I cannot comment on those. The historic buildings, like the Alamo and the missions, are tough to spot beneath all the skyscrapers.įor context, my mom and I visited on a sunny Saturday afternoon. That might be more interesting to a local resident, but to visitors, the view could be of any large city. Most of the buildings are skyscrapers and hotels. My only complaint is that the view itself is pretty boring. You get to see more of the city that way. Unless you have reasons you can't walk or your hotel is really far then I'd recommend walking. On the way back we took a horse and carriage ride so it was an all around amazing time. If you decide to park at the tower the fee is around $8 but we just walked from our hotel and it took less than 15 minutes. It was candlelight so I had to use the flashlight on my phone to see the menu but the staff was super friendly and the food was delicious! I will definitely visit the tower again but the restaurant was a one time thing. My only complaint is the lighting in the restaurant. My total before tip was over 200 but it's an experience I'll never forget. It was awesome getting to eat while spinning 360 degrees with gorgeous nighttime views of the city. If you get a chance eat at the chart house restaurant which is right below the observation deck. I always forget this everytime I go and end up with really tangled hair. If you decide to walk outside be prepared for how windy it is. The observation deck has an indoor and outdoor section which is cool. The movie was cool but the seats in front squirt water on you from time to time and my jacket was pretty wet when the movie was over. If you want to see San Antonio from a bird's eye view then this is your chance! For about $15 each we were able to ride the elevator to the observation deck and watch the 4D movie at base level.
